About the artisan and her hats

Culturally inspired yet universal, historical yet timeless, handcrafted to wear forever...

I’m a self-taught artisan hatmaker based in Seattle, Washington. I craft my hats mostly by hand from textiles, furs, leathers and found objects that I rescue from thrift stores, your grandmother’s closet, and clothier’s cutting room floors. I have been credited with keeping several hundred pounds of textiles out of landfills over the past 30+ years.

Each of my hats is a unique piece of wearable art inspired by places I have visited, and my self-guided cultural and historical studies. Travel has become an intrinsic motivation behind many of my designs. You can read about what inspires me from the menu choices at the top of this page.

Designs on this site as well as my social media sites are copyright. You are welcome to share photos as long as you credit my work : )

About the company

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Philanthropy is more important than profit. Reuse is more sustainable than buying new…

August Phoenix Hats is a one-woman business and a registered trademark in Washington State, and a DBA of my original company, Lao Hats.

Lao Hats – named after a character/persona I portrayed in a living history group, rebranded a few years ago after the name no longer reflected the scope of work I was doing. I solicited my fans on Facebook to help me find a new name…

August Phoenix refers to the resplendent and legendary bird that is reborn from its own fire and ash. The new name also reflects the fusion of cultural and historical influences that dominate my work, while highlighting my philosophy of giving new life to previously used materials.

It is, in itself, a rebirth of my original company…

I donate a percentage of your purchase (sale not profit!) to selected non-profit organizations, which you may choose from as they are listed in the the Philanthropy section of my FAQ page.
