Imagination is more important than knowledge. Philanthropy is more important than profit. Reusing existing materials is better than buying new. These three credos guide everything I do.
August Phoenix Hats are custom-made and one-of-a-kind hats created by Heather Daveno – culturally inspired yet universal, historical yet timeless, handcrafted to wear forever…
August Phoenix refers to the noble and legendary bird reborn from fire and is a reference to the reclaimed textiles and found objects that are ‘reborn’ as new hats of enduring style and quality. It is, in itself, a rebirth of my original company…
Lao Hats – named after a ‘persona’ I portrayed in a historical living history group – rebranded a few years ago after the name no longer reflected the work I was doing. After polling my followers on Facebook, we came up with August – a synonym for resplendent’ and Phoenix – the mythical bird referenced in several cultures as being reborn from its own ash. The new name reflects the fusion of cultural and historical influences that dominate my work, while highlighting my philosophy of giving new life to previously used materials.
I craft my hats mostly by hand from recycled textiles, furs, leathers and found objects that would have else wise ended up in a landfill. Each hat is a unique piece of wearable art inspired by cities I have visited, museum exhibits and my personal cultural and historical studies.
I am a self taught artisan based in Seattle, Washington. Designs on this website are copyright. You are welcome to share photos as long as you credit my work. August Phoenix Hats is a one-woman business and a DBA of Lao Hats, a registered trademark in Washington State.
I donate a percentage of your purchase to selected non-profit organizations. When you purchase a hat, you may choose from my list of non-profits in the the Philanthropy section of my FAQ page. If you have any other questions, please feel free to Contact me.
Thank you for your patronage, and for helping me to pay things forward!
