The Hatmaker

About me and my hats

Culturally inspired yet universal, historical yet timeless, handcrafted to wear forever...

I’m a self-taught artisan hatmaker based in Seattle, Washington. I craft my hats mostly by hand from textiles, furs, leathers and found objects that I rescue from thrift stores, your grandmother’s closet, and clothier’s cutting room floors. I have been credited with keeping several hundred pounds of textiles out of landfills over the past 30+ years.

Each of my hats is a unique piece of wearable art inspired by places I have visited, and my self-guided cultural and historical studies, which you can access via the Historica and Stitchery links in the top navigation bar. Travel has become an intrinsic motivation behind many of my most popular designs. You can read excerpts from selected travels by clicking on links in the Tag Cloud at right, most will take you to the full stories at Daveno Travels. I have also become a regular contributor to Mainly Museums.

About my company

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Philanthropy is more important than profit. Reuse is more sustainable than buying new…

August Phoenix Hats is a woman-owned sole proprietorship. Both August Phoenix Hats and Lao Hats are registered trade names / DBAs in Washington State. It is a rebranding of Lao Hats, my original business, named after a persona I portrayed in a living history group. After nearly a decade, the name no longer reflected the scope of work I was doing, so I solicited my Facebook fans to help me find a new name…

August Phoenix Hats became the new name – referring to the resplendent and noble bird of legend that is reborn from fire and ash. The new name also reflects the fusion of cultural and historical influences that dominate my work, while highlighting my philosophy of giving new life to previously used materials. It is, in itself, a rebirth of my original company…

Giving back to my community has always been an important part of what I do. I donate a percentage of your purchase price to selected charities which are detailed on my Philanthropy page.

Thank you for visiting my site! Please contact me with any other questions you may have about my hats, articles I have written, and my travels!
