Heather Daveno and Her Hats

Culturally inspired yet universal, historical yet timeless, handcrafted to wear forever...

I’m a self-taught hatmaker based in Seattle, Washington. I craft my pieces mostly by hand from textiles, furs, leathers and found objects that I rescue from thrift stores and other people’s closets and cutting room floors. I am credited with keeping a few hundred pounds of textiles out of landfills over the past 30+ years.

Many of my art pieces are inspired by places I have visited, as well as my cultural and historical studies. Travel has ben an intrinsic motivation behind many of my most popular designs. You can read excerpts from selected travels by clicking on links in the Tag Cloud at right, or read the full stories at Daveno Travels. I am also a regular contributor to Mainly Museums.

August Phoenix Mercantile

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Philanthropy is more important than profit. Reuse is more sustainable than buying new…

August Phoenix Mercantile is the newest evolution of August Phoenix Hats — a woman owned sole proprietorship and registered trade name and DBA of Lao Hats in Washington State.

August Phoenix is a reference to the resplendent and legendary bird that is reborn from its own fire and ash. It reflects the fusion of cultural and historical influences that dominate my work, while highlighting my philosophy of giving new life to previously used materials. It is a rebranding of Lao Hats, my original business, named after a persona I portrayed in a medieval reenactment group for 20+ years. The addition of Mercantile is a shift in focus towards my broader interests, including historical research and publication.

Philanthropy has always been an important part of what I do. I donate a percentage of your purchase price to selected charities which are detailed on my FAQ page.
